How do I work

number 1

Contact

First visit consists of a 90 minute session where I get to know the person and gather any necessary information. Further tests may be warranted (e.g. radiological imaging or bloodwork) just to make sure there are no physical causes which may explain or interfere with the process that is troubling the patient.

It is at this point in which I try to formulate a first hypothesis and plan out a work route; which I expose and facilitate explanations on the different therapy proposals. Whenever possible, the decision on which is the best route will be accorded between the patient and therapist.

Follow-Up

First visit consists of a 90 minute session where I get to know the person and gather any necessary information. Further tests may be warranted (e.g. radiological imaging or bloodwork) just to make sure there are no physical causes which may explain or interfere with the process that is troubling the patient.

Individual therapy, Family therapy or group therapy

Depending on each case, what point in therapy and/or disposition, I may propose one type of visit or another. In some cases a combination of several strategies may be indicated (eg pharmaceutical, individual + family therapy)

Redirection

If at any point during the therapy I detect an aspect on which I know of another expert that may be of greater help, I will naturally propose a therapist change and serve as a means for making the switch to another professional be as smooth as possible.

Continuous updates and supervision

We professionals are not born with the knowledge, nor is there in mental health a pocket guideline book or protocols to easily follow. Each case requires individual and personalized attention and treatment. That is why it is imperative we stay up to date on latest developments and treatments to keep actualizing our knowledge and offer the best care.

Since every individual is unique, each with his or her own reality and problems, it is sometimes necessary the supervision of another mental health professional with more experience. I try to keep up to date by taking courses regularly; I also ask for senior supervision as much as I need to.
